The Technological Revolution Argumentative Essay Example For Students

The Technological Revolution Argumentative Essay Technological Changes of the Past and PresentThe technology which surrounds almost everyone in the modern society, affects both work and leisure activities. Technology contains information that many would rather it did not have. It influences minds in good and bad ways, and it allows people to share information which they would otherwise not be able to attain. Even if a person does not own a computer or have credit cards, there is information on a computer somewhere about everyone. The technology which is just now beginning to be manipulated and harnessed is affecting the minds of small children and adolescents in ways that could be harmful. It is affecting our immediate future. It also gives another form of communication and exchange of information which was not available before, information that is both good and bad. We will write a custom essay on The Technological Revolution Argumentative specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Technology is one of the principal driving forces of the future; it is transforming our lives and shaping our future at rates unprecedented in history, with profound implications which we cant even begin to see or understand. Many different elements affect how satisfied we are with our lives. The impact of technology on these elements can change how safe, healthy and happy people feel. Throughout history, people have looked for better ways to meet their needs and to satisfy their expectations. Technology has improved the way people feed, clothe and shelter themselves. Technology has also changed other aspects of everyday life, such as health care, education, job satisfaction, and leisure time activities. People have used technology since they first chipped stone blades to improve their hunting. Yet some people call the current age the Technological Age because of societys dependence on technology. For the first time in human history, almost all the goods and services people use depend on technology. The products of technology are available to almost everyone in society. The economy of a country influences how the people of the county live. Technology is often considered the key to a nations economic growth. Most economists would say that it is one of the factors in economic growth, but they would probably disagree about its importance. Many economists think that if technology sparks growth in one sector of the economy in the form of increased productivity, growth will also occur in other sectors of the economy. Jobs may be lost in one industry, such as agriculture but new jobs may emerge in other sectors of the economy. There may be more jobs or, in some case, completely new kinds of jobs. Technology may also be used to solve urgent problems. Our growing population is using up infinite supplies of natural resources. Innovations in technology can allow for more efficient use of limited or scarce resources. More products might be made from the same amount of raw material using new techniques. Technology can increase productivity to help countries compete with other countries in selling goods and services. Some say that without technological improvements, the economy would grow slowly or not at all. Society could remain the same for years, some what like the early Middle Ages in Europe, in which there was little economic change for hundreds of years. Ways to manufacture goods have changed continuously through history. Today, several important new advances in technology are transforming. These technologies create new products; most of them also change the way people in society interact. These technologies have a tremendous impact on our monetary resources. Some of the technologies which are having the greatest effect on the economy are: robotics, automation and computerization. Robotics: Artificial IntelligenceAlthough robotics have a well-established position in the Japanese industry, it has not, so far, turned out to be what many experts thought it would. Businesses in the United States and Europe have not embraced industrial robots at nearly the rate of the Japanese, and other more consumer oriented versions are very much in the development phase. Even so, industry sources believe that the use of robots to make clothes and other consumer goods will be common by the turn of the century. This general trend (the use of robotics) is likely to change, perhaps dramatically, in the next two decades. Robots are in one sense collections of other more basic technologies: sensors, controlling and analysis software, pattern recognition capabilities and so on. Most all of these other technologies will make significant strides in capability, size, power requirements, and other design characteristics and the integration of these other advances should accrue directly to robotics. .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 , .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .postImageUrl , .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 , .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3:hover , .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3:visited , .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3:active { border:0!important; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3:active , .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3 .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u38401cf6848a1e6e74b53572cc3a4de3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Capitu's Letter to Bento    EssayRobots are machines which combine computer technology with industrial machines. The computers are programmed to operated the machines. Robots come in many shapes and sizes and can be programmed to perform a variety of tasks. Robots are gradually being introduced on assembly lines in some industries. In automated factories, the amount produced by each human worker increases tremendously, but robots are very expensive for industries to buy. Only large industries such as the auto industry currently develops, though, the cost of robots is dropping and improvements to robots are making them more flexible so more manufacturers will find them useful. The use of robotics effects our economy immensely. Robots are much more durable, faster, efficient, ,reliable and cheaper workers. The use of robots in industries will rise because employers will see the advantages that robots have over human employees. The utilization of robots in the workplace will have a massive effect to the unemployment rate. Automation: Moving in a New DirectionA small number of decisions we make play a major role in shaping many other areas of our lives. For example, when we decide what (and how) we will consume, a huge system of farms, distributors, stores, manufactures, restaurants etc these respond directly to those desires. One of the most important decisions we make concerns the way we move ourselves and our commodities. Our system of transportation greatly affects how we use energy, develop technology , affect the economy and environment, and shape our social relationships. When Henry Ford was starting out on his remarkable career in Detroit, a bustling town which gave full vent to the creative energies of some amazing innovators, the economy of was showing enormous cracks. But at the time, even the most prescient of fortune-tellers would have had trouble forecasting what was about to happen. Carriage and buggy-whip makers were still turning handsome profits in a growing market, and the few cars on the dusty, unpaved roads were little more than fanciful toys for the adventurous rich. Some of the communications technologies pioneered toward the end of the nineteenth century must have seemed just as esoteric to the leading financiers and industrialists of the day, who were doing fine bankrolling the traditional industries they knew so well. Yet, within a few short years, Ford and others would shape consumer products out of the new technologies that would set in motion an awesome economic transformation. Henry Ford didnt invent the automobile. Nor did he invent mass production or the assembly line. Ford is famous because he took these existing concepts and incorporated them into a n efficient, large-scale system of manufacturing inexpensive, reliable cars. Im going to democratize the automobile. Ford said, and when Im through, everybody will have one. (Chase, 1997, 47)Cars have made a big difference in the way communities have been designed. Street layout, the design of homes, and traffic laws have changed as methods of transportation has changed throughout history. Automobiles are responsible for more than half the airborne pollution in the western world. Many plans are being developed to control air pollution. Burning cleaner fuel and burning fuel more efficiently both help the environment. Pollution controls devices for cars have also been developed. For example, catalytic systems were installed in many car exhaust systems in the 1980s. These devices change dangerous gases into harmless carbon dioxide and water. They also burn up much of the exhaust with fresh air in a chamber near the exhaust pipe. The car of the future will need new designs which make even better use of the fuel which powers them. Cars influence the ways communities are developing. Since it is possible to drive great distances rapidly, many people choose to live far away from where they work. Many cities have a downtown core where people work and a suburban area where they live. People may spend a great deal of time commuting through rush hour traffic. In spite of many problems , it is hard to imagine a society without cars. Cars and trucks have become so important that most people would not want to do without them. They would prefer to see the design and construction of cars changed to accommodate safety and environment concerns. The car has helped created jobs, freedom, convenience and fun as well as pollution, traffic jams and urban sprawl. The challenge facing the auto industry is to keep pace with the changing values of society and to develop the technology to do so. .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb , .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .postImageUrl , .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb , .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb:hover , .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb:visited , .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb:active { border:0!important; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb:active , .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u638033c40cedcae05601c5167ab9d6eb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Mental Illness EssayComputerization: Extraordinary TechnologyComputers are used in most manufacturing industries today. Computers are used to automate processes in much faster ways . These can be office procedures such as word processing or bookkeeping, or production processes such as cutting and assembling clothes. Computers are becoming an important part of industrial design. Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) are new terms which describe the important role computers have come to play in our industry. The wide use to computers has stimulated companies which manufacture the many parts needed to make and operate them. Some people, however feel that computer technology has gone too far. It may create problems such as machine errors in peoples records and banks and governments may gain access to private financial information. Computerization has made it easier for banks to keep track of individual baking transactions so charges for these have increased. Branch-bank employees worry that computers and automated tellers may replace people. While technological change has been a priority for banks over the last years, they also recognize the need to communicate in person with customers. Banks must manage money and data effectively but they must also maintain personal relations. Bank personnel may be assisted with computer and some services may work well when automated, but banks will probably never lose their staffs to machines. A new, information-technology-driven circle of growth has replaced the aging manufacturing ring and scarcely not many have noticed. The statistics that told us so much about the economys health during the 1920s to the 1980s are still treated with a reverence they no longer deserve. Thats why the experts have so much trouble explaining whats going on now. The prophets mumbled about the severity of the recession in industry; rising unemployment; a weakening currency. Now, statistics can be managed to produce all sorts of results. But no matter how you shake or stir them, the numbers show plainly that a New Economy, embodied and driven by technology, information and innovation, has emerged, with little fanfare, in the past decade. And though it would be impossible to tell from the general statistics, this New Economy is absolutely booming, with no peak in sight. Now with the new wave of the Internet minds of not only small children, but also adolescents and adults become influenced by this outside information. As the mind develops, things such as pornography is no longer the main concern. Now, because of the easy access to information, the fourteen years old who has just discovered that she failed ninth grade can find out how to make a bomb out of household detergents. As can the laid-off business man, the dumped boyfriend, and the deranged psycho. My general sentiment about technology, and the Internet are simple. In light of the history of mass communication, there is nothing we can do to protect any media from the sound byte or any other form of commercial poisoning. But, our countrys public opinion doesnt have to fall into a nose-dive of lies and corruption, because of it! Television doesnt have to be a weapon against us, used to sway our opinions or to conform to people who care about their own prosperity, not ours. With the power of a critical thinking education, we can stop being motivated by the sound byte and, instead we can laugh at it as a cheap attempt to persuade us and have a little fun with it. Technology is not all bad. The whole point of this is that people have to be sure that everyone is aware of all the good and bad aspects of technology. I feel that the advance of technology is a good trend for our society; however, it must be in conjunction with advances in education so that society is able to master and understand technology. In the future we may see many problems arising from this new wave of technology. Unemployment numbers will most probably rise, crime will increase, and We can be the masters of technology, and not let it be the masters of us.

Free Essays on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Embryonic Stem Cell Research: Helpful or Hazardous Should stem cell research be banned? This is one of the most controversial questions posed in the last century. The heart of this controversy is whether or not it is morally ethical or legal to use stem cells in research and medicine, possibly to discover the cures and treatments for many diseases afflicting people today. Although stem cells are found in adult organisms as well as in fetuses and embryos, embryonic stem cells are the only types that are able to become any other type of cell. As organisms develop, stem cells become specialized types of cells and are harder to find and less potent in their ability to differentiate. For, this reason, it is often though that embryonic stem cells offer the most promise for medical breakthroughs. This is also another reason why the government should fund embryonic stem cell research along with the fact that embryonic stem cell research can benefit those suffering from serious diseases and help with other medical problems such as burns. Stem cells themselves have actually been around for almost as long as life has been on earth. In essence, all life evolved from stem cells of some kind. Stem cell research has been around for almost as long as microscopes. It is only within the 1980s that more sophisticated developments have been allowed for the growing of cells in laboratories. Fetal nerve cells were one of the first stem cells that were used to treat Parkinson disease. The National Institute of Health states that stem cells are generally very early stage cells that have the ability to turn into other specialized types of cells and at the same time replicate themselves (2).For example, a Binion 2 stem cell can turn into liver cells, skin cells, and nerve cells etc. There are two groups of stem cells that are important: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Free Essays on Embryonic Stem Cell Research Free Essays on Embryonic Stem Cell Research Pro Embryonic Stem Cell Research "Is it more ethical for a woman to donate unused embryos that will never become human beings, or to let them be tossed away as so much garbage when they could help save thousands of lives?" (cnn.com) This is the question that was asked by Christopher Reeves an advocate for stem cell research who recently passed away. This is the question asked by millions of children and adults with terrible incurable diseases like Parkinson's, diabetes, Alzheimer's, heart disease, spinal cord injuries and cancer who have the same hopes and aspirations that Christopher once had. Christopher Reeve’s advocacy for researching stem cell research helped to make it a major issue in the 2004 campaign between George W. Bush and John Kerry. Many people opposed to embryonic research including President Bush argue that stem cells can be derived from sources other than embryos such as adult cells, umbilical cords from babies, from human placenta (whitehouse.gov/). This is true but these people fail to realize the limited potential that these types of stem cells offer compared to embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are the only types of cells that are totipotent or pluripotent meaning they can become any type of cell in the body. (isscr.org/science/faq.htm) America needs to uplift the restrictions on embryonic stem cells and peruse research to the fullest extent so patients and their families are not denied the endless hope of possibilities that new research can bring to society. I believe that the ban on federal funding should be uplifted allowing scientists to explore their maximum potential while following certain ethical restrictions. In August 2001 Bush’s stem cell policy was supposed to provide the funding for 60 stem cell lines. Many of the stem cell lines turned out to be useless either having no scientific value or not even being a genuine stem cell line. As of today there are o... The Cold War and U.S. Diplomacy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Cold War and U.S. Diplomacy - Essay Example Cuban Missile Crisis was the most precarious event which took place in the history of cold war, where U.S discovered that USSR had placed anti-ballistic missiles in the vicinity of the U.S territory. This pushed President Kennedy to take action in order to reverse the effect, and Kennedy acted very cautiously and via his diplomatic skills he was able to convince Khrushchev to roll back the missiles. Another such instance was the conclusion of Nuclear Test Ban Treaty between U.S and USSR, where Khrushchev first agreed over to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, while later began testing nuclear weapons, as a result of which U.S tested five such weapons to retreat the situation. Analyzing the Kennedy Doctrine in this context makes perfect sense, as it implies that U.S will take all necessary steps to contain the effect of communism, i.e. expansion of the policy of containment (Thompson 1992). Though he was an advocate of diplomacy, whenever required he took all crucial steps to contain the co mmunism threat and to secure his homeland and also his allies. In his inaugural address of 1961, President Kennedy said; â€Å"Let us never negotiate out of fear. And let us never fear to negotiate†. ... However on October 14, the U2 plane took pictures of these ballistic missiles placed in Cuba by the USSR, which definitely called for an action (Kempe 2011). Now, President Kennedy had a few options on the table out of which some were quite aggressive, while others were neutral in nature. After considering various options, Kennedy considered the option of naval blockade which was indeed a very diplomatic move as he named it quarantine to make it sound legal. Also, chances of aggression on the part of USSR were also limited and at the same time USSR was pressurized to roll back the weapons. It was quite wise on the part of President Kennedy to use the option of quarantine i.e. to block the way where missiles were being transferred; however, the diplomatic skills were tested after the option was utilized, i.e. while he was negotiating with Khrushchev (Cull 1998). He communicated his concerns to Khrushchev via his brother Lyndon Johnson after which a deal was reached when Khrushchev put forth his concerns about the missiles in Turkey, and thus USSR rolled backed the weapons while a secret deal was reached via the backdoor implying the rollback of weapons from Turkey as well. Also, the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was also an attempt on the part of President Kennedy to follow his policy of containment i.e. to contain the Russian threat of nuclear war. Firstly, USSR and even UK signed the treaty which was a huge triumph for the diplomatic skills of Kennedy as he pursued his goal through peaceful means (Maga 1994). However, another challenge arose when USSR started preparing for another nuclear weapon test when they had already given their word on the Nuclear Test Ban. President

Ethics of Buddhism and Islam Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Ethics of Buddhism and Islam - Essay Example Several promising signs from space were noticed after his birth; moreover, a wise man predicted that he would be triumphant. He was born in a noble family, but was not satisfied with the life he lived. He realized that not everyone lived a lavish life; therefore, he sought ways to stop human suffering. Muhammad’s birth took place in Mecca. He claimed that an angel had visited him on return from one of his trips from Mount Hira, which is where he went to meditate in private. The angel told him to spread the word of God. He was reluctant at first, but he accepted the task after the angel made occasional visits to urge Muhammad to do God’s will. His wife Khadija also encouraged him to do God’s will. Muhammad claimed he was a prophet, and that his task was to pass the message given to him by God. Muhammad urged people to do what Allah wanted them to do. Buddha, in the early days, clarified to the people that he was neither God nor a savior. He claimed that he was a m an, with no superhuman powers; he was a pathfinder. He taught people how to live in a spiritual manner, and that everything that exists goes through pain and distress. He enlightened them on the path to freedom, which was the only way of getting out of the misery brought by life and death. Individuals have to know the factors that link human actions, the causes and outcomes of the actions. He was against believing in a god because he thought the act encouraged egoism, and led to suffering. On the contrary, the Islamic religion emphasizes that humans should do what God wants them to do because he is their guide and judge. Islam emphasizes on submission to the creator; moreover, Muslims had to practice peace and unity. Muhammad Urged Muslims to love and treat each other as brothers because Islam is about brotherhood; hence, it is wrong to take another Muslims possession without permission (Fasching, DeChant and Lantigua, 2011). The lives of Buddha and Muhammad inspired their followers . Both of them lived the lives they expected from their followers. Both religions believe in eternal life. Muslims believe that humans do not sin because it is their nature; they do so because they are weak. On the contrary, everyone is answerable for their actions because they are expected to do God’s will. Those who live as expected will have eternal life in paradise and those who live sinful lives will suffer in hell. Muslims are expected to fear God, and should always repent when they sin because they will be forgiven. Islamic religion claims that God is merciful to people with honest repentance. Buddhists believe that exemplary deeds are awarded excellent results while awful deeds lead to terrible results. Buddhist religion encourages its people to be wise in their actions so that they can free themselves from bondage. Buddhists do not believe that one can live eternally without change; in addition, they do not support materialism. They believe that life is about change; individual changes in terms of behavior and people suffer because of the urge to live longer. Muslims believe that eternal life is only for those who do the will of Allah, while Buddhists believe that everlasting life is determined by the actions of an individual in their present life. Islamic religion emphasizes that humans are the most prestigious creatures in the universe. The religion also claims that some animals were created for the good of the human

Business Resources - Assignment Example 1.2 Recommendation of Best Strategy for Expanding and Supplying the Four Target Markets 6 2.1 Current Economic and Market Conditions in the Euro Zone 6 2.2 Strategies to Manage Foreign Exchange Exposure 8 3. Factors to Be Considered While Conducting Investment Appraisal for the Strategies 11 References 14 Overview Elecdyne Wales is a South Wales-based electronic goods producing company that had been instituted as a spinoff from a Japanese electronics company and the Celtic University of Technology. The objective of Elecdyne Wales is to develop patentable electronic goods making use of leading edge telecommunications and multimedia technologies and market them in the European Union region. Elecdyne Wales wants to increase its extent of production as it wants to supply its goods in the United Kingdom and Germany this year, and France and Italy in the following year. Thus, the company has to make certain strategic investment decisions and it has four different strategies to choose from. The first option is to expand the existing production capacity at South Wales and reinforce its export function. The second option available is to form a strategic alliance with a European supplier or distributor. The third option is to shift its production base to a location in the European Union region, while th e fourth option is to shift production to Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC). This paper appraises the strategic investment options available to Elecdyne Wales in context of the latest economic developments in the European region, and recommends the best strategy to cater the markets of UK, Germany, France and Italy. The papers also discusses the existing economic and market circumstance in the Euro zone and proposes both short-term as well as long-term strategies for the company to manage foreign exchange exposure. Additionally the paper also accentuates on the factors to be considered while carrying out the investment appraisal of the last three options available to Elecdyne Wales. 1.1 Evaluation of the four Options in light of recent development in European Economies 1.11 Analysis of Investment Strategy 1 The first strategic option of the company is to expand its existing production capacity at South Wales and strengthen its export function. Implementation of this stra tegy would enable the company to have superior control over its goods manufacturing process and also save the company from economic exposure of an overseas region. Moreover the company would not require additional capital investments to set up a new unit and it would also not lose its technological knowledge and expertise to its foreign associates. Thus, the strategy of reinforcing its existing manufacturing facility would ensure that the company maintains its technological edge in addition to having more operational flexibility. Nevertheless, there are certain drawbacks of this strategy. Since the company is looking forward to export its products to the European markets, carrying out the production in South Wales would rule out the understanding of the European culture and market specifics, in addition to higher costs of manufacture and haulage. Thus, though the strategy gives certain short-term benefits such as no additional production set-up investments, minimal exposure to trans lation and economic exposure and manageable foreign exchange risks; the strategy can be termed as defensive in the long run and it would keep the company away from cost competition (Gillespie et al. 2010). 1.12 Analysis of Investment Strategy 2 The second alternative available is to form a strategic alliance with a European supplier or distributor. If the company opts for this strategy it would gain from the existing network and the market knowledge of the

Women In Medieval Europe

Women In Medieval Europe I chose the topic of Women in Medieval Europe to write my essay about. I will attempt to provide some basic knowledge about how the lives of women were very difficult during this time. Some things that will be discussed are the submissions women had to give to men. To start this essay I ask a number of questions, the first one is as follows: What type of work did women do during this period? Women that were from poverty stricken homes would have to go out and work with their husbands to bring in more income because his alone was not enough to support their household due to women having multiple children. Women would help their husbands haul hay or plow fields. Poor women did not have shoes to wear so they walked around barefooted and during the winter they would not have any winter clothes to keep them warm so they would wrap themselves in sheets to protect them from the cold. They also took their children to work with them because they could not afford nannies like the wealthy class could. How was life different for wealthy women during this time? As with any culture having money always gives you more advantages. Although wealthy women had to obey the same things, such as not speaking unless you were spoken to or only if it was approved by a man first and obey the men. Women of higher classes had jobs to do as well some would have to help run their businesses and if their multiple businesses or properties that the family owned then she would have to help her husband over see them too. Of course they could afford to hire workers but there were somethings that had to be handled by them personally. If the womens husband passed away, then everything was left entirely up to her to take care of. Wealthy women had more advantages even when it came to caring for their children. They had the luxury of hiring nannies for this job. The nannies would even breast-feed their babies for them. Why would women in this time become a Nun? Women became nuns in this time because this was a way they could get an education and gain some rights. This was especially popular for the lower class women because this was their only hope of getting a proper education. Becoming a nun meant that she would have to be celibate and the chance of having children would be lost. By becoming a nun women grew their own crops and had their own house. With the education that was provided, they were also able to pursue careers. Many of the poor families that had multiple daughters would make their daughter become a nun because they could not afford to raise them and to ensure that they would get an education. The bad side of this was that once you became a nun it was forbidden for you to leave or have children. Back in this time it was said that a woman that could not or would not bear a mans child was of no use at all. What happened to unwed women during this time? Unmarried women that owned land or multiple properties were considered to have the same rights as men. But if and or when she did get married, then she was forced to give her husband all of her properties and she gave up her rights. Women that were not married could wear their hair down but the women that were married had to wear their hair in a linen wimple to cover her hair up because this showed sign of modesty. Women were not able to pick their husbands. Men were able to pick their wives at times. Marriages were very carefully arranged by family members. Marriages were not based on love or emotions. Families would try and arrange marriages between their daughters and sons based on economic factors. These factors would be if they had their own land, if they owned their business or if they come from a wealthy family. So once again money had a great deal to do with influences with other people. It was really a marriage of property and money that the church unified and the families would have a very large crowd of well known people to witness this occasion. This was commonly between the wealthy people but what about marriages between the poor women? The poverty stricken women and men normally married who they pleased because they had nothing to gain or lose. The legal age to get married in the medieval days was 12 for girls and 14 for boys. This was a common age to be married back then because of the expected life span. Due to lack of medical care and medicine, people died at a much younger age than they do today. There were very few reasons that the couple could get divorced. Some of the reasons they could get divorced were if they were not Christians, they were not of legal age, if they had previous promises to another person or the woman could not perform sexual relations. Women had to submit to their husbands whenever he desired for her to. Were there any powerful women during this time? One person could sum this question up and that is Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc was considered a heroic figure in France. She disguised herself as a boy to join the army and became one of the most famous leaders. Women were not allowed to join the army and that is the reason she disguised herself as a boy. Joan had said that she had visions from God and he was calling her to be a warrior. There were other famous women such as Hildegard of Bingen who was considered to be a very famous writer of sacred music in the middle ages, Christine de Pizan was a famous writer and feminist one of her more popular books were The Book of the City of Ladies and last but not least there was Lady Godiva, she was the woman famous for riding nude on a horse through the town of Coventry. She wanted to prove that the towns people were honorable and would not look at her being naked. There were a number of much respected Queens during this time, as well as a number of princesses. Final question that runs through my mind is was it really that bad for women? My answer would be yes it was extremely bad for women. Women had absolutely no rights at all. Any man in the family could tell her to do something and she had to do it. If she did not do what she was asked to do then she was badly beaten. It was said that a woman that did not obey was disobeying God. A woman had to give up her land and rights to the man she married. Also women were not even allowed to pick the person they were to marry. Imagine if it was the same way today! So many women are so outspoken and very independent that we couldnt even think about a man running our entire lives. Not only not being able to speak or do what we want to do but to be badly beaten just because we choose not to. Women were also very often accused of doing very awful things. Some of the accusations were practicing witchery; women would be burn at the stake for this. Conclusion: The conclusion for my essay is that with all of the research that I have done to see what the lives were like for women during the Medieval Period, I have found that their lives did seem extremely hard and unfair. To justify why this may have been, many would say Christianity. Eve was perceived as the trouble maker and then there was the impurity that many men thought women had because of menstrual cycles. While Christianity might have played a role as to why men thought they could treat women this way, it also provided protection for women as well. It did not allow divorce for any given reason (as it is today). It also did not allow the men to kill their wives. Sure they were able to beat them within an inch of their life but at least they did get to keep their life. There were some kings that treated women fairly and had a great deal of respect for them but there were not a lot of them. But this was well over a thousand years ago and a lot of things have changed since that time. I am personally, very grateful that they have changed!

Types Of Diabetes Essay -- Health, illnesses

Our modern life is full of illnesses and diseases. Each disorder has its main causes, its effects on our body, and its own treatment. Most of these illnesses have been in our world for a long time. However, our life styles with its inorganic food, stress, and bad habits have assisted these diseases to develop and to spread faster than before. One of these diseases is Diabetes. Diabetes can be defined as a metabolic disease in which the body's inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. It can lead to a lot of other sickness such as heart diseases, high blood pressure, and blindness. Even though most of these illnesses happen after having diabetes for a long time, the change in glucose levels in the body can cause a coma, or even death (American Diabetes Association). There are 25.8 million children, and adults in the United States living with diabetes, which represent 8.3 percent of the population, according to the American Diabetes Ass ociation. Diabetes has many types. However, we can divide them into a number of different categories: Diabetes type 1, Diabetes type 2, Gestational diabetes, and other types of diabetes. These three types have similar symptoms such as frequent urination, losing weight, and vision changes (Judd). However, each type differs from the other by the kind of people it Infects, the factors that cause it, and the way it can be treated. Type 1 is also known as Insulin-dependent Diabetes. It happens when the pancreas releases less amount of insulin than the proper amount, which causes changes the rate of sugars in the blood. The pancreas’ ability of giving insulin keeps on decreasing until it stops. At that point, people who have this type of diabetes can onl... ...ations, and Insulin : Along with Facts about the Most Common Complications of Diabetes and Their Prevention, Current Research in Diabetes Care, Tips for People following a Diabetic Diet ... 5th ed. People Play Important Roles in Our Lfe Essay

The most significant people in your life would normally be your parents followed by siblings and extended family members. We are first sons or daughters before we take on the role of brothers or sisters. Our role will then be of husbands or wives and then fathers or mothers as we grow in our lives. We become grandfathers or grandmothers and with God’s blessings, become Great Grandfathers or Great Grandmothers. Our role will then become whatever role we take on in life. Our parents would definitely be the most significant people in our lives. How we grow up as an individual goes back to the cornerstone of our family unit. When there is love amongst the family members, this is where we are nurtured when we were young and we take our values from the family. Siblings that come along in the family unit are our companions and when we grow up being supportive of each other, that is where we can have support and encouragement from our siblings as well. As we grow up in society, we have friends and teachers along the way. Teachers who have motivated us during our school days play a significant part in our growth as well. As the saying goes, â€Å"No man is an island† and hence our dependence on others and how they contribute to our lives by their presence gives meaning to our ambitions, our values, our way of thinking and so much more. In turn, we give a helping hand, a listening ear to our friends who need support and encouragement or just someone to understand them. When we have been touched by others in our lives and in normal cases, would be the family members. People without this family support such as orphans or kids being fostered out or adopted by their adoptive parents find themselves being cared for by others who make every effort to see to their needs and love them. These people then play a very significant role in their lives. It is very important that we appreciate the people in our lives and if we can thank them for being in our lives, it is a beautiful moment to cherish. Often enough, many of us take our loved ones for granted. Let that not be the case and let us be aware that we want to appreciate our loved ones and make every effort to let them know that we appreciate, care and love them. We need not do great things for our loved ones. Remembering them is one way to show our appreciation of them and we can do so by taking the time to be with them, talk to them and just be with them. Let us all take time to love our close and beloved so that they know they are loved and appreciated in their lives. It is something we can do and let us all make an effort to do so. Being appreciated and loved adds meaning to one’s life and it is up to each one of us to do so.

American Central Banking Impact

American Central Banking Impact Free Online Research Papers American Central Banking and Oil and the Impact of their Visual Depictions By: Teodor Serbanescu Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of The Humanities Arts Requirement Worcester Polytechnic Institute Worcester, Massachusetts This Seminar in the History of Science and Technology and the History of Scientific and Technical Illustration is the culmination of my five Humanities and Arts courses at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Every class, in some way, related to the theme of the seminar, and helped maximize my final product. For example, HI 2314 set up a foundation of basic American history for me to build upon. HI1312 discussed American social history, which taught me about public opinions and behaviors through time. EN2211 helped improve my writing skills, which was crucial to my success in the seminar. Also, HI2331 and HI2332 taught me the history behind science and technology over a period of two centuries. The subject of the actual seminar was more focused on the technical images throughout the history of science, which required me to do some research that I have not done previously. The paper that I wrote was about American central banking and oil and the impact of their technical depictions. It ti es into the theme of the seminar because central banking and oil companies were, in a way, a type of science, and the images related to them and impacted them in a strong way. Introduction Since the nineteenth century, central banking and the oil industry have been areas of importance in regard to the shaping of American politics and society. Central banking and the Federal Reserve System have played a significant role in the country’s finances, but have also been scowled at by a number of people, especially during its early years. The oil business has affected our country in a variety of ways as well, and also has been frowned open at times. During this time, artists have drawn images in newspapers and magazines that portray what is happened in the country. Additionally, these images are drawn mainly to provide a theme of controversy, such as the one that banking and oil have provided. Central banking and the oil industry have been scrutinized with visual imagery throughout history, often times to depict their true nature to the public. Central Banking America’s first bank was founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1871. It was modeled after the Bank of England. Unlike today’s banks, it did not hold all of America’s money supply, rather only about 20%. The Bank was opposed by some, most notably Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who thought that the system would lead to corruption, manipulation, and misuse. Five years later, a second bank was created to improve the first. The second bank, like the first, did not have an official name. It was structured mostly the same as the first bank, except it expanded across the US and was allowed to hold more money. However, the bank’s downfall was due to President Andrew Jackson, who denounced the bank in 1830 and claimed it to be a source of corruption. The image above is a political cartoon published in an 1832 newspaper. This drawing was inspired by Andrew Jackson’s battle with the second bank of the United States; Jackson vetoed the bank in 1832, saying that it served mainly to make the rich richer. Jackson told his vice president, Martin Van Buren, â€Å"The bank is trying to kill me, but I will kill it!† These words are portrayed in the above cartoon quite literally. While analyzing this picture, a few things are obvious: the main characters are Andrew Jackson, a young man, and the green monster, and it takes place in a bedroom at night. The bedroom belongs to Andrew, the young man is Andrew’s butler, and the green monster is the portrayal of the bank; I can only assume this through logic reasoning. Andrew Jackson is holding a sword and trying to attack the monster ‘bank’, while his butler is holding him back, and the monster is in an offensive position as well. The implications and themes of t his picture are as follows: Andrew Jackson is a small old man with a brave heart (a characteristic that is generally favored among people), because he is trying to fight a huge monster. The young butler is trying to hold Andrew back from this monster (this adds a comical affect). And the monster ‘bank’ is trying to attack Jackson (monsters are generally un-favored among people). When putting these three generalizations together, people during that time, and even today, will get the idea that the bank is evil and Jackson is brave and noble, which is exactly what the artist most likely intended. It turned out that Jackson was in fact favored by the majority of people, and succeeded in his battle with the bank; whether or not this newspaper cartoon had an impact on that is a question that cannot be answered, but I believe the answer is yes. After the downfall of the second bank, the Free Banking Era emerged. It lasted from 1837 to 1862. Each state was allowed to govern their own interest rates, loans, and other finances. Nevertheless, banks still existed, but only locally. In 1863, the National Banking Act was passed and a national currency was introduced. The system had certain flaws, such as the inability to back up their money with treasuries. This lead to the Panic of 1907, in which the government came to the conclusion that separate national banks were insufficient, and a main central bank was needed. The picture above is another political cartoon, published in 1908 by the Pioneer Press. It reads, â€Å"Uncle Sam’s Need Of An Elastic Currency // President Roosevelt: â€Å"You see, those galluses ought to have rubber in them, so that when Uncle Same stoops to move the sheaf there won’t be much strain on the buttons.†Ã¢â‚¬ 1 Galluses is an old way of saying a pair of suspenders for trousers, and sheaf is another way of saying a pile.2 What Roosevelt is implying is that the US government needs an elastic money supply in order to move the money to different locations. He is personifying the US bank as Uncle Sam, the ‘galluses’ as the money supply, the ‘sheaf’ as the portion of the money to be moved, and the buttons as the finance center. In this picture, the artist portrays Roosevelt’s analogy in a clever way. He drew Uncle Same about to ‘move the sheaf’, as Roosevelt had mentioned, and even drew out some of the impl ications that he made. For example, Uncle Sam’s ‘Galluses’ are drawn out and labeled ‘US Currency’, the buttons are labeled â€Å"Finance Center†, and the ‘sheaf’ is labeled ‘The Crops’, which is another term for the goods or money to be moved. The artist also added two gentlemen watching and Uncle Sam with a pondered look upon their faces; one of the men has ‘Congress’ written on his hat, implying that congress is overseeing this process and looking for ways to improve it. The humor is that Roosevelt took the serious idea of an elastic money supply, and created this witty scenario that we have above. The effects that this image had on the public, other than being funny, was to inform them about this new idea and raise their support towards it through amusement. After the Free Banking Era, in 1913, the Federal Reserve System came to power. This system was not exactly part of the government, but too far away from it either. It was responsible for holding money and deposits from other banks, i.e. reserving it, also called the ‘banker’s bank’. Since then, the Fed has gone through a number changes and provisions. Today, the Fed employs a monetary policy, which gives it the power to change prices, taxes, and credits to ensure positive economic growth in the country. It is responsible for controlling our national finance and debt. This cartoon was drawn by Greg Strid in 2007 and named ‘Uncle Sam’s Credit Brothel’. It portrays the Federal Reserve as sort of vacuum machine, sucking up the money coming from the window of the store. The store, labeled ‘Uncle Sam’s Brothel’ is in flames. Also, the man is driving the machine, with a hat labeled ‘Ben’, he has an unhappy look on his face. You can tell that the setting is during the early 1900s, because the automobile and store is made of wood. There is also a sign on the other side of the building saying ‘Moral Majority Entrance’.1 The implication of ‘Uncle Sam’s Credit Brothel’ is to represent an ordinary bank during that time, and brothel is used to represent the money and credits, not actual prostitutes, as the word actually means. The message that the artist is trying to send here is that the Federal Reserve is destroying small town banks by coming through the back entrance, i.e. using politics to destroy them, not actual force. The driver, named Ben, has a sad expression on his face because he is portrayed as an average working citizen. Oil Industry Oil has been around for thousands of years, but until the 1800s, oil was used for other purposes than fuel. It was used for disinfectants, vermin killers, hair oil, and boot grease. The oil industry in the US began in the mid 1800s when gas powered automobiles were invented.1 Soon after, a man named John D. Rockefeller took control of the oil industry by driving his competitors into bankruptcy and then buying them out. In 1870, he formed the Standard Oil Company, which took control of the entire oil industry in the US. This all ended in 1911, when the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Standard Oil Company was using illegal monopoly practices. Congress then divided the oil industry into 34 new companies. The image above is a political cartoon drawn by Udo J. Keppler in 1904. It appeared in a magazine, during that time, called ‘Puck’. The picture shows an octopus monster, labeled ‘Standard Oil’, devouring a manufacturing site and wrapping its tentacles around some buildings and people. The octopus is representing J.D. Rockefellers oil industry monopoly. The other figures in this picture are the steel, copper, and shipping industries, which are being crushed under the octopus. Also, the state house and U.S. Capitol located the left and right of the monster are being grabbed. The octopus is reaching towards the White House.1 The four people being attacked seem to be the owners of the other industries, whom are disgruntled by their defeat. This picture’s setting is on top of the globe, which emphasizes the power and strength of the standard oil octopus. The main theme of this drawing is to show how powerful the standard oil company is becoming, how aggres sive and scary it is, and how close it is to grabbing the white house and gaining full control of the country. Could this have played a role in the eventual downfall of Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company? Up until World War II, the true value of oil was not entirely known to the US. After WWII, the government quickly realized the full extent of oil value, and started playing a vast role in the oil business. In 1933, the government paid $275,000 to Saudi Arabias King for an oil concession, and this was just the first of many transactions that the government would make with foreign countries. Since then, the value of oil has increased. Today, oil prices are rising drastically, and causing much controversy in public opinion. The problem is that US does not have enough oil supply to fulfill its demand. Due to this, the Bush and Cheney Administration stated that they would focus their attention more on the Middle East for future oil supply. Once the September 11th terrorist attacks occurred, the administration decided to engage Iraq. Many believe that the main reason for this was oil, although, President Bush says that the main reason was because they believed Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Recently, Bush stated that the forces cannot leave Iraq because terrorists will use the oil refineries against us. This cartoon was drawn by S Greenberg and published in the Ventura County Star newspaper in 2003. It shows George W Bush in a blue business suit and army helmet, talking about reasons to go to Iraq. In white quote bubbles, he firsts asks why we must go to Iraq, then in the other bubble, he gives four reasons. These reasons are the same as the ones that he publicly states all the time, such as Saddam’s threat to the US and the threat weapons of mass destruction.1 The humor is how the artist bolded and capitalized the letters ‘O I L’, in the words ‘toil recoil boil and soil’. So if a person reads only the bold letters, they will read ‘oil, oil, oil, oil’ where Bush is explaining the reasons to go to Iraq. Also, Bush’s facial expression and posture show that he is trying to preach something, which adds more of a comical affect. Most citizens know that oil has a large role in the reason why we are in Iraq, even though Bush won’t admit it; cartoons like this one help emphasize that point. Conclusion A lot of times, when organizations, such as the Central Bank and Oil Industries of the US, try to do something immoral or unjust, an artist, somewhere, ends up drawing something about it. These depictions are seen in newspapers, magazines, and now, the Internet. Unfortunately for the organizations, public opinion matters, and visual images can change public opinion from the way they depict the organizations. To conclude, visual imagery can affect the way a country is run in an indirect way. References 1) Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. A History of Central Banking in the United States. Within a species itself, individuals are similar but not identical. The differences are called variations, and when numbers of individuals exhibit the same variation they form a variety. A variety is distinguished from a race because the latter has greater constancy, whereas the former fluctuates in general and tends to disappear, whilst individuals showing such variation engender a line which continues over a larger or smaller number of generations and becomes approximated to the specific type. This is what Galton in 1889 termed "filial regression." Specific characters do exist representing a middle term, and on one side or the other of this average, we find variations which arithmetically follow Gauss's Law, or the Law of Mean Errors of the Calculus of Probabilities. This can be confirmed by taking the more distinctive characters. Thus height, weight, colour of eyes, basic intensity of metabolism, pulse, blood pressure, and so on. In species other than the human we can take for instance the weight of certain seeds, the height of a plant, the number of vertebrae in certain fish, and so forth. The graph showing such variations quantitatively is called a "Galton's curve," and demonstrates that individuals showing typical average characters of the species are the most numerous, whilst divergencies above and below such average diminish in proportion to the degree of variation of the character from the average type. Thus, for instance, the height of individuals: there is an average height, a distinctive feature for each species and t his will be the height of the majority of specimens. There are taller individuals and shorter ones, and the numbers of these outsiders decreases as their height differs more and more from the standard. There is furthermore, as we have repeatedly mentioned, a tendency to revert to the specific standard. Short parents and tall usually have offspring whose height is different from their own and more or less in accordance with the variance of the parents from the average standard. In all of these cases the tendency for "reversion to type," to "balance" in the species, is evident. There may well exist primitive species with a certain degree of stability, fairly constant in form, such as those distinguished by Jordan in 1848 as between the plants and the midpoint of the limits of a Linnaean species. Thus, for instance, in Viola tricolor, Jordan distinguished several dozen various species, independent and stable as regards the transmission of their characters through the seeds: with large, small and middling blossoms respectively identifiable through particular features of the component parts of the blossoms, seeds, and so on. Individual portfolio on global enterprise Essay - 2

Individual portfolio on global enterprise - Essay Example The introduction of globalisation along with its effectiveness is generally considered to have commenced in the decade of 1980s. The different aspects and the procedure of globalisation have become one of the key components for the financial development of a particular nation. In this context, the business organisations deeply concentrate upon globalisation factor because it might affect their financial performance along with other business aspects by a significant level (Stewart, 2007). Thus, on the basis of above discussed grounds, it can be stated that globalisation can be measured as a multidimensional character that crucially affects towards the worldwide phenomena. In this particular paper, the conception of globalisation along with its different impacts and importance towards the economy of a particular nation and also on the business organisations will be depicted. ... of Emirates Airlines will also be depicted.
